Songbird was the nickname of the incredible little girl who inspired Kierstin to pursue early childhood speech language pathology. She tragically passed away at the age of just 5 years old, but Songbird Speech exists today in her honor and beautiful memory. The term Songbird is also significant because many gestalt language processors are musically inclined, and musical elements are often incorporated into our therapy.
Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) is a description of the progression of gestalt language development in stages (1-6) as described by SLP Marge Blanc. Children progress through echolalia to novel, spontaneously self-generated language when provided support within this framework and via affirming, child led therapy approaches.
At this time, Songbird Speech is not considered in network with insurance providers. Services with Songbird Speech are provided on a private pay basis. A SuperBill can be written upon request and shared with your insurance however for potential reimbursement
If your child uses scripted language, or delayed echolalia, they are likely processing language in a gestalt manner of development. There are two ways that children process language: analytic and gestalt. While analytic processors process language word by word (e.g. "mom", then "mom go", then "mom go store"), gestalt processors process language in "chunks" or gestalts (also known as scripts). Single words are not processed as single units of meaning until later in language development. These children use delayed echolalia (often of whole phrases/songs/movie lines) to acquire language. Most autistic individuals are gestalt language processors, but neurotypical children can process language this way as well. Some children require support to effectively move through the stages of gestalt development to develop natural, self-generated language.
Neurodiversity affirming therapy is paramount to our approach at Songbird. Neurodiversity affirming therapists honor and respect individual differences as valid. Affirming therapists utilize a strengths based, child/client led, total communication approach which encourages authentic and meaningful growth in communication skill development. An affirming therapist will never force a child to sit at a table and "work" - they know that true learning and growth happens when children are physically and emotionally regulated and able to be their authentic selves. A neurodiversity affirming therapist will incorporate the client's interests into all therapy sessions and meet your child where they are at instead of pushing neurotypical expectations and norms.
At this time due to licensing restrictions, we are not able to offer direct services to individuals outside the state of Illinois. However, we do offer parent coaching, clinician coaching/consultation, and IEP review and support to anyone, nation and world wide!
